India reaches out to Bangladesh's new government after election victory

Tarique Rahman was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh after his party, the BNP, won a landslide election victory. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Rahman on the win, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla represented India at the swearing-in ceremony in Dhaka.

Modi sent a letter to Rahman inviting him to visit India, stating that India would support a democratic and inclusive Bangladesh. Rahman's top aide said the new government wants ties with India based on mutual respect, and the BNP thanked Modi for his congratulations.

Some reports suggest the new government's priorities will include addressing the status of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is in India, and a treaty on Ganga river waters. India is working to rebuild its relationship with Bangladesh under the new leadership.
