U.S. forces carried out military operations in Somalia targeting terrorist groups. The strikes killed eight al-Shabaab fighters and also targeted leaders of ISIS's branch in Somalia, known as ISIS-Somalia, who were hiding in caves.
U.S. Africa Command, or AFRICOM, conducted these airstrikes. Officials have said that rising threats from ISIS to the U.S. homeland are a key reason for the increased military action in the region.
