Amazon is cutting about 16,000 corporate jobs in its latest round of layoffs, which the company says is part of a push for greater efficiency and a focus on artificial intelligence. The news was reportedly confirmed to employees in an email from Amazon's HR chief, Beth Galetti.
At the same time, Amazon is reportedly in talks with other tech giants like Microsoft and Nvidia to invest up to $50 or $60 billion in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. This potential massive investment highlights Amazon's strategic shift toward AI, even as it reduces its workforce.
In other Amazon news, the company is closing most of its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores, but it also recently opened its largest-ever retail store. Separately, shipping company UPS announced it will cut up to 30,000 jobs, citing a shift away from handling Amazon shipments.
