United Nations reports thousands of migrant deaths and criticizes political rhetoric

The United Nations reported that nearly 8,000 migrants died or vanished on migration routes in 2025. The UN agency said the actual death toll is likely much higher.

UN chief António Guterres condemned the dehumanization of migrants for political gain. He also criticized the international failure to manage safe migration.
